History

Mount Longonot gets its name from the Maasai word "Oloonong'ot," meaning "Mountain of Many Spires," referring to its rugged, steep crater edges. The volcano last erupted in the 1860s, forming the dramatic caldera seen today.

Traditionally, the surrounding plains were Maasai grazing lands, and the mountain served as a natural lookout over the Rift Valley.
